You can view the general way of how email works. In step 2 you can see that it will try to resolve your host name by using a DNS lookup for an MX record of your host name. If that fails, it will not be able to find where to send your message. It simply cannot find a destination. After that, it tried to look for a gateway to relay your message through, but could not find one either, thus it has given up.
You can easily add public DNS servers to your Network settings, so that they will be queried separately and will give you resolution of MX records.
