How to set up additional DNS servers
| Submitted by vitaly on | Oct09 |
Some ISP's prevent their DNS server from being able to resolve MX records. This is done intentionally, so that residential clients won't be able to use their own SMTP server.
Fortunately, you can use any public DNS server. It is not mandatory to use your ISP's DNS server. You can even combine theirs and yours, so if their DNS server will not find the right record, it will be further queried from the other DNS. We tried using some very good DNS servers from Level 3 communications. Their IP addresses are:
4.2.2.1, 4.2.2.2, 4.2.2.3, 4.2.2.4, 4.2.2.5, 4.2.2.6
I am getting: "no way to send messages, no IP addresses are present, check that gateways are present"

What is an RBL (or DNSBL)
| Submitted by vitaly on | Oct08 |
RBL or DNSBL is a means by which an Internet site may publish one or more dynamically changing lists in real time for others to use. It is mainly used by SMTP servers to block or flag mail coming in from certain IP addresses, thus effectively blocking and rejecting traffic from such sites. There are other uses for these protocols, but in our applications we are mainly interested in this particular use, so we will concentrate on that.

Why SPAM is such an issue
| Submitted by vitaly on | Oct07 |
One might ask a question: "If I send a lot of spam, what is the big deal? Users who don't want it, will just delete it, right"? The problem with that, is that it is not that simple. First of all, in order to properly transfer this email message, a lot of infrastructure must be set in place. Wires, switches, Internet bandwidth, SMTP server, managers, IT personnel, monitoring facilities and so on. The more email messages that has to be delivered through the servers, the bigger the volume of it all. New high capacity servers, more Internet bandwidth, more infrastructure and so on.
