How to set up additional DNS servers

Oct09

Some ISP's prevent their DNS server from being able to resolve MX records. This is done intentionally, so that residential clients won't be able to use their own SMTP server.
Fortunately, you can use any public DNS server. It is not mandatory to use your ISP's DNS server. You can even combine theirs and yours, so if their DNS server will not find the right record, it will be further queried from the other DNS. We tried using some very good DNS servers from Level 3 communications. Their IP addresses are:
4.2.2.1, 4.2.2.2, 4.2.2.3, 4.2.2.4, 4.2.2.5, 4.2.2.6

There are other uses for these protocols, but in our applications we are mainly interested in this particular use, so we will concentrate on that.

Why SPAM is such an issue

Oct07

One might ask a question: "If I send a lot of spam, what is the big deal? Users who don't want it, will just delete it, right"? The problem with that, is that it is not that simple. First of all, in order to properly transfer this email message, a lot of infrastructure must be set in place. Wires, switches, Internet bandwidth, SMTP server, managers, IT personnel, monitoring facilities and so on. The more email messages that has to be delivered through the servers, the bigger the volume of it all. New high capacity servers, more Internet bandwidth, more infrastructure and so on.

In the modern world, SPAM has become a significant issue for the ISP's and users alike. A lot of ISP's want to minimize amount of spam emails going through their systems and thus most of them follow a standard pattern for all users. Not that this is any standard at all, but when fighting spam, this has become a common practice and most ISP's are using these techniques to fight spam in their systems. Here is what they do:

Using our E-Mail Server with a hardware device

Very often people need to connect one of their smart devices like smart copy machine, smart fax or smart router to the network. These devices often have the ability to send alerts over the network using SMTP. However often, it is not possible to use the regular email server.
